Maciej Zieliński first composed music for a theatrical play at the age of 18. The play received a number of prizes at Warsaw Theatre Review in Warsaw, including a prize for music. The play was also shown at 'Ateneum' Theatre in Warsaw. "It was an important event for me, since it was the first time my music was successfully presented to a wider audience. This convinced me my desire to become a composer and study composition was not totally ungrounded".

A documentary by Natalia Koryncka-Gruz, "Powrót Arystokratów" - "Return of Aristocrats" (1992) was another important project. So far the composer's experience had been limited to short commercials. This was the first full-length film - a chance to work on a bigger form.

In 1994 he continued and extended his first experience with theatrical productions through work for TV theatre." Cooperation with 'Akson' film studio resulted in arrangements for the play "Dom Otwarty", directed by Michał Kwieciński, music for "Warszawianka'" directed by Andrzej Chrzanowski and a few pieces for 'Mały Książę' ('the Little Prince' by A. de Saint Exupery), directed by Natalia Koryncka-Gruz. Working with Jerzy Gruza on Ronald Hardwood's play 'Poisoned Pen' (1995) was a most inspiring experience. The production had an air of crime story about it, thus giving the opportunity to "build a precise dramatic plan of the music. "
At that time Zieliński also worked with well-known film music composers: Stanisław Syrewicz, Krzesimir Dębski and Jan A.P. Karczmarek (2005 Oscar winner for the music to "Finding Neverland"), programming electronic instruments and preparing the scores. Participating in recording sessions of the composers was an invaluable experience.

"Gry uliczne" (1995) directed by Krzysztof Krauze was Zieliński's debut in feature films. Within less than three weeks some 50 minutes of most diversified music was produced: from rock, through Acid Jazz love theme, techno to orchestral music and a string quartet.

Soon after "Gry uliczne" Zieliński was invited to compose music for a Polish-American production of Kruczkowski's "Niemcy" (Germans), directed by Zbigniew Kamiński (1996). As a result of the plot, the music is very dramatic. It is exclusively orchestral music, stylistically closer to composer's classical works.
In 1998 for a short while Zielinski got back to films - "Amok" directed by Natalia Koryncka-Gruz featured his arrangement of the song "Szeptem".

A break in film projects started shortly, due to Zieliński's stay in London and postgraduate studies at Royal Academy of Music. "Świąteczna przygoda" directed by D. Zawiślak marked his return to film music. The soundtrack for the film comprised some 40 minutes of orchestral music. One of the four songs by Zieliński, sung in the film entitled "Kto wie" by the group De Su, was one of greatest Polish Christmas hits.

Zieliński's greatest commercial success so far has been his soundtrack for the film "Nigdy w życiu" (2004), directed by Ryszard Zatorski, featuring Danuta Stenka as a leading actress. This romantic comedy, based on a novel by Katarzyna Grochola, was seen by an audience of 1.6 million people, and album with the soundtrack (BMG) got to the fifth place of the Official Sales List. Zielinski's "Tango de Amor" is still frequently played by radio stations.

His music for the TV series "Kryminalni", directed by Ryszard Zatorski, Piotr Wereśniak and Patryk Vega, has also been very successful. It is over two hours of orchestral music combined with modern electronic sounds, composed in 2004.
His latest production is soundtrack for the film "Dublerzy", directed by Marcin Ziębiński. The music is particularly interesting because it was partly recorded in Sicily, with traditional Sicilian instruments. The soundtrack presents an original combination of orchestral music, modern electronic sounds and traditional Sicilian instruments. It also includes two songs, one of which is performed by Kayah - one of the most famous pop stars in Poland.
